The fledgling Maiyan Nation, spawned by the war-torn USA into the Asteroid Belt, has discovered of the war-critical metal iridium.

Any nation possessing a ton of it could build so many nuclear-powered space ships that it could dominate the Earth.  Maiya doesn't want anyone to do that.

NASA has been subordinated by its direcotor, Dereck Haas, whose ambitions exceed Hitler's. When (not if) he discovers the Maiyan Nation has iridium, then as did European gold ships of yesterday, he will expend all necessary resources and lives to get it.

The  joyous, 40-person Maiyan Nation has nearly zero chance of withstanding his might, but one is still greater than zero. 

For one thing, Anne is working on the 19th Faster than Light (FTL)  Phase of Matter equation, which slightly promises the ability to move their asteroid across the Asteroid Belt in the blink of an eye. She publishes her work in the Earthly Journal of Theoretical Mathematics.  But there is a 20th Equation to solve.
